From the Beach to the Buxton Bottle: A Seaside Send-Off to the Ten-Tier Tour

The final whistle has blown on my Ten-Tier Tour, and what better place to wrap things up than Scarborough—a town where the sea breeze carries the scent of fish and chips, and the football ground is named after a theme park. Yes, Flamingo Land Stadium. It’s hard to take a team seriously when their home sounds like it should have roller coasters and candy floss, but here we are.

Before the match, I did the quintessential Scarborough thing: a stroll along the beach followed by a hearty portion of fish and chips. Feeling full and content, I made my way to the stadium. That's when things took a turn. I was directed to the wrong stand and confidently told a long-time season ticket holder that he was in my seat. He wasn't. To make matters worse, I pulled out a bottle of Buxton water—yes, Buxton, the opposition. The glares I received could have curdled milk. Note to self: always check the name of the stand, the seat number and the brand of bottled water you are holding.

The match itself was a lesson in clinical finishing. Buxton, chasing a playoff spot, showed their full-time training benefits by dispatching Scarborough Athletic 3-0. Kieran Burton opened the scoring in the 35th minute, followed by goals from Cian Coleman and Johnny Johnston in quick succession during the second half. Scarborough had their moments—Alex Brown hit the bar, and Harry Green had a shot cleared off the line—but they couldn't find the net.

At halftime, still stuffed from my seaside meal, I skipped the pie but couldn't resist a pint of John Smith's. It felt like a fitting tribute to the traditional football experience.

The Flamingo Land Stadium, with its capacity of just over 3,200, reminded me of venues in the Singapore Premier League. The quality of play, too, wasn't far off—spirited but lacking that extra spark. Reflecting on this journey, it's been a whirlwind. From the highs of Burnley's promotion push at Turf Moor to the grassroots charm of Harrogate Railway, each match offered something unique. I've witnessed the passion that fuels English football at every level, and it's been an absolute joy.

As I hang up my boots on the Ten-Tier Tour, I do so with a newfound appreciation for the beautiful game's depth and diversity. Here's to the next adventure—wherever that may be.

Up the tiers!
